When my parents asked me to join the military, I was very concerned. I support the military and our country, but I certainly didn’t want to go into battle and die in the name of free college. However, after meeting the military recruiter, I learned that there are many jobs that you can do that will allow you to serve without necessarily going into battle. I decided that I would train and learn something that would help me get a career later. Instead of joining in an infantry unit, I decided to become an HVAC technician. I had no idea that the military had their own HVAC technicians that fix all of their HVAC units. I would have assumed that the military bases hire local HVAC technicians to come in and fix their furnaces and air conditioners whenever they stopped working. However, once I realized that this could be a security problem, I understood why they needed HVAC technicians that were in the military. I had the opportunity to learn how to fix furnaces and air conditioners on a large scale, and I worked with a great group of guys. Since the military has bases all over the world, I had the opportunity to travel to many different countries to maintain their HVAC units as well. The best part about being an HVAC technician for the military is that I am qualified to work as an HVAC technician as soon as I leave the service. The military can even guarantee me a job as soon as I leave! I love my job!
